PROJECT OVERVIEW
Aim

The aim of this research is to explore the relationship between digital spaces and reality through the lens of surrealism, and examine how surrealist techniques can be used to create an immersive digital experience that highlights the intersection of consumer culture, technology, and the climate emergency.

Objectives
bg3.png

Examine the validity of sustainability claims in digital fashion as a viable alternative to traditional fashion. Understand the designer/artist's role and position in this rapidly growing industry.

Evaluate personal values on sustainability, reservations and attraction towards digital fashion, and how they shape the art form.

Expand artistic horizons by documenting the journey of transitioning from traditional fashion design to a new medium, using diverse tools.

The Appeal of Surrealism in Digital Fashion as an Escapist’ Dreamland

Surrealist artists have masterfully crafted dreamscapes by relinquishing the constraints of their conscious minds and allowing their subconscious to lead the way. Through this freeform exploration, symbols and meanings, often buried deep within the psyche, are brought to the surface. Similarly, fashion is a highly visceral and subconscious medium, with a strong connection to Surrealism. The fantastical and whimsical elements of fashion often evoke a sense of escapism. However, it is important to note that Surrealism does not aim to provide an escape from reality, but rather to offer a unique perspective on it.

Symbolism & Automatism

In this endeavour, we delve into the realm of Surrealism, utilizing the technique of Automatism. The artistic process necessitates the suppression of the conscious mind, allowing the subconscious to seize the reins and unearth material from the depths of the unknown psyche. Additionally, this investigation delves into the realm of Symbolism, in which objects are imbued with metaphorical significance, representing a deeper, underlying meaning. Thus, this study of practice encompasses both Automatism and Symbolism.

WORLD BUILDING

Embark on a journey through time with this virtual experience. In the first phase, you'll be transported to the era of modernity, where the gears of industry have begun to turn, and fast fashion emerges as a driving force of consumerism and financial growth - but at what cost to the environment? In the second phase, technology takes center stage, as fast fashion brands rush to capitalize on the digital fashion boom. But as they chase profits, the harsh realities of their impact on the planet - like rising sea levels - loom in the background. Finally, in the third phase, witness the ultimate outcome of unchecked consumption as the sea engulfs the land, and nature adapts by becoming the very garments we wear. Will we learn from our mistakes before it's too late?

Phase 1

SOME THINGS
ARE IRREVERSIBLE

Interactive exhibit shows consequences of overconsumption through destruction of natural objects and a non-functioning "undo" button, challenging perceptions of resources and desire for newness.

Phase 2

FAST DIGITAL FASHION

This phase visualises a digital retail space where a luxury-priced digital dress is juxtaposed with counterfeits of the dress from digital fast fashion brands.

Phase 3

THE AFTERLIFE

This space is completely submerged in water, displaying the objects of nature that are destroyed in the first phase, camouflaged as garments in order to survive.

Conclusion

By embracing a surrealist approach, I've been able to tap into my subconscious and communicate my emotions, feelings, and thoughts in a visceral manner. Using the technique of automatism, I've been able to create something unexpected by relinquishing control and giving in to my instincts. With digital fashion, surrealism allowed me to see beyond the surface level and materiality of it. By exploring my attraction and reservations towards digital fashion, I was able to find value in it as an art form. By disregarding the traditional aspects of fashion such as wearability, tangibility, and self-adornment, I was able to separate my perception of digital fashion from the physical. It still serves as a form of self-expression and reflection of my identity, but it is not limited by societal norms and expectations.
